June 13, 2010

Summer is definitely here. We have already had a few 100+ degree days here in Texas, and I'm sure there will be more to come. So we're staying out of the heat and enjoying the sewing room. Thank goodness for air conditioning!

Please note that the shop will be closed on Saturday, July 3rd to allow our employees to celebrate US Independence Day with their families. We will reopen on Monday, July 5th.

New Fabrics

Vanity Fair - All of the designs from this Windham line were selected from just 2 quilts from the archives of Nancy Gere. They are comprised of colors that were becoming popular towards the end of the 1860s, namely dark plums, rich browns, reddish pinks and the occasional clear blue. Attic Shirtings - The light colors and tiny patterns in these fabrics from Jo Morton make this line perfect to use as backgrounds for your reproduction blocks. To see the entire line, click here.

In-Shop Program

Prairie Women Sewing Club - Common Threads has a new club that will be held in the shop called Prairie Women Sewing Club. Each month there will be a project that is a duplicate of an antique quilt created during the time frame from 1840-1890. These projects are called Make-Do patterns. The women on the prairie could only use what they had, and if they ran out of fabrics in their color scheme, they put in something that would "make do" with the rest of the fabric. That's what we're going to do. Participants will exchange pieces of fabric with other members of the club for their projects.

Projects are small - wall hangings or table runners or pin cushions. The final project is a lap quilt. Meetings will be at the shop, where stories and discussions will take place. Specific dates have not yet been set for this club, but the meetings will be on Saturdays, and the club will start in September. Keep an eye on our website or Facebook for updates on this fun club!

Don't forget that Common Threads can now be followed on Facebook. If you'd like to get immediate notification of our new fabrics, patterns and kits, as well as notifications of sales that don't always make it into the newsletters, consider becoming a fan of the page.
