Common Threads Quilt History Tour to Nebraska
April 11-15, 2011

Are you ready for some quilt travel? Common Threads has partnered up with Sally Ashbacher and Debbe Sheridan to bring you the best little quilt related travel trip west of the Mississippi! We will be leaving here Monday April 11, 2011, and returning at the close of the day on Friday, April 15th.

Now that we have your attention, you need to know that our ultimate destination is the fabulous International Quilt Study Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, where we will be treated to a Behind-the -Scenes docent guided tour of things that many an eye will never see. They will be rolling out the red carpet. This museum is state of the art and after their tour we will be given ample time to roam around and visit the collections that will be on view while we are there. We'll have more information about that later.

castleAlong the way we will be doing antiquing, quilt shop shopping, eating at new and different places and meeting and making new friendships while traveling through the rolling countryside. The first day out we will be stopping in Guthrie, Oklahoma, for lunch and shopping and then on to Lawrence, Kansas where we bed down after dinner and make ready for a full day of quality events. Our friend, Terry Clothier Thompson, will be joining us in the morning for breakfast and giving us a wonderful lecture that will delight us all. We will be having lunch at the historical Castle Tea Room. The castle was built in 1894 and during that time the stone mansion was deemed one of the largest and most beautiful homes in the city. The architecture of the castle is Victorian Romanesque revival and its fine stone work as well as it’s tower harkens back to the castles of Scotland.

spencerAfter lunch we will be visiting the Spencer Museum on the campus of the University of Kansas where we will be viewing the Rose Kretsinger appliqué quilt collection and the Carrie Hall pieced blocks which stack up to the ceiling. They also have the 1770 Adam and Eve Bible quilt which is in such delicate condition that its days may be numbered. Nowhere but in this museum can you see these priceless collections and they will be yours to behold while we are there. After supper and before the close of the day we will be visiting again with Terry at her studio and fabric shop for more excitement.

A second night in Lawrence, another great breakfast at the hotel and we are off to Lincoln for our tour of the Quilt Study Museum. The Quilters Guild of Dallas has endowed this facility during their planning and early construction stages so they are very excited to know that such a large group of ladies is coming their way from the Dallas area. The Cosmic Cow Quilt Shop is a stop after dinner. Lazlo’s Brewery and Grill is ready for our dining pleasure. Overnight will be at the Haymarket area of Lincoln. On the way home we will be traveling thru Salina, Kansas, where will stop for lunch and a visit to the Quilting Bee quilt shop which the owner tells us will be a real treat out in the middle of nowhere. We roll on to dinner in the Bricktown area of Oklahoma City and bed down for the night. Our last morning out is a leisurely one, and after an extended continental breakfast we are free to roam the 23rd Street Antique Mall, have lunch and end up at the wonderful Oklahoma Quiltworks quilt shop to hunker down for our last chance at some serious fabric shopping before we head home.

Your tour includes bus travel on a luxury motor coach provided by Dan Dipert and our own personal driver, Rick Weimer, and includes the driver's tip, all your lodging, your museum tickets, nine meals, groaning goodie bags filled by Denice herself, snacks, door prizes and of course stitching and talking and laughing until your sides will just want to split.
