June 4-10, 2012
Are you ready for some more travel! Common Threads has once again partnered with Sally Ashbacher and Debbe Sheridan of Quality Quilt Tours to bring you a wonderful quilting history tour. The journey begins June 4th at Common Threads Quilting in Waxahachie and heads north to Guthrie, Oklahoma and the Sooner Quilts shop where you will be having a box lunch and an opportunity to shop. That evening you will arrive in Wichita, Kansas for dinner and to spend the night.
June 5th you head to Newton, Kansas and arrive at Charlotte's Sew Natural, then on to Quilt Cottage in Hays, Kansas where you will have lunch. That night you will stay at the Cambria Suites Hotel in Aurora, Colorado and have a magnificent Italian buffet in the Pikes Peak room of the hotel.
On the morning of June 6th you will enjoy Harriet Hargrave's Treadle Arts Quilt Shop for an antique quilt lecture by Harriet. The Treadle Arts shop has a full line of fabrics including an extensive collection of reproduction and 30s fabric, lots of books, patterns and projects including Harriet's Heirloom line of batting.
Then that afternoon, you get the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the Georgetown Loop railroad and shop in historic Georgetown, Colorado. The beauty of the Rocky Mountains surrounds you as the old-time steam locomotive winds up the Clear Creek Canyon, hauling your train past the remains of several gold and silver mines and at one point crossing over a 90-foot high trestle. The fully enclosed as well as open cars allow a breathtaking view of everything along the line.
Once you've returned from Georgetown, you will be taken to the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver, Colorado. The mall was designed 25 years ago by I.M. Pei and is a mile-long pedestrian promenade lined with outdoor cafes, flower baskets, retail shops and restaurants. You will find numerous fountains and plazas offering a variety of daily special events and entertainers. Free shuttles travel both directions the entire length of the mall from early morning to late at night. They stop at every intersection, so it's easy to cover a lot of ground in a short period of time.
On June 7th you head south to Castle Rock and to the studio of Cindy Brick and editor, designer and writer who travels the world teaching quilting and quilt history. The former editor of Quilter's Newsletter has written 6 books such as Quilts of the Golden West and Crazy Quilts.
After lunch you will enjoy a private tour at the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum and gift shop., as well as an opportunity to enjoy historic Golden at your own leisurely pace. While walking around town, consider stopping in at the Golden Quilt Company, the Creative Crafts Groups publishing gallery and the many shops lining the historic downtown area. That evening you will head back to Aurora, Colorado for the night.
On June 8th you travel up to Boulder to the Celestial Seasonings Tea Company for a private tour of the factory and the chance to buy teas in the gift shop, along with lunch in the cafe. Then you will continue north toward Windsor, Colorado for a small shop hop including Quilting Hands in Lyons, Colorado and both Quilters Stash and Little Wool Shop in Windsor. That evening, after a buffet dinner at the Austin Homestead Bar and Grill out on the deck, you'll arrive at the Cambria Suites Hotel in Kansas.
